What Is Neuro-Ophthalmology?

Neuro-ophthalmology is an ophthalmic subspecialty that involves the study of visual problems as they relate to the nervous system.

Neuro-Ophthalmology Conditions

Our neuro-ophthalmologists provide care to a broad spectrum of patients and dedicate their practices to the diagnosis and treatment of neuro-ophthalmic disorders such as:

• Strabismus (crossed eyes)
• Optic nerve diseases (optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, optic nerve tumors, optic nerve swelling, etc.)
• Unexplained loss of vision
• Visual disturbances
• Double vision (diplopia)
• Involuntary eye movement
• Pupil abnormalities
• Visual field loss/defects
• Headache, facial, or eye pain
• Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
• Eyelid abnormalities (droopy eyelids, eyelid spasms)
• Thyroid eye disease
• Microvascular cranial nerve palsy
• Visual changes related to head injury, brain tumor, or stroke
• Neurological diseases that may be associated with visual disturbances (Parkinson disease, myasthenia, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.)

When to See a Neuro-Ophthalmologist

In most cases, patients are referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist by a neurologist, neurosurgeon, ophthalmologist, or optometrist. However, if you are suffering from vision issues that seem to correspond to the conditions a neuro-ophthalmologist treats or you have unresolved vision problems that other doctors have not been able to address, we encourage you to make an appointment with one of our physicians.

The neuro-ophthalmologists at the Dean McGee Eye Institute are the only neuro-ophthalmologists in Oklahoma! These medical doctors and board-certified ophthalmologists have completed additional fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology. They are actively involved in medical student education, residency training, and often train qualified ophthalmologists to become neuro-ophthalmologists.
