The DMEI Difference

The Dean McGee Difference in Pediatric Ophthalmology

Choosing a pediatric ophthalmologist for your child is an important decision, one that can come with lifelong implications. As a result, it’s important to educate yourself about the practice that you will entrust your loved one with. To help you, here are some distinct characteristics of the pediatric ophthalmology practice at the Dean McGee Eye Institute.

Affiliation with The Children’s Hospital at OU Medicine (Children’s)

Our doctors provide the pediatric ophthalmology coverage for the emergency department and neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s and regularly consult on patients who are admitted. This is a testament to the skill of our doctors and their ability to handle the most complex cases.

We are also the only pediatric ophthalmology practice in Oklahoma with a clinic at Children’s (in addition to our clinics at the main DMEI location and our location in Edmond). This allows us to better care for those patients who need to be connected to other services provided at the hospital. It also provides our doctors a close working relationship with pediatric specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, and rheumatology.

Familiarity with Rare Eye Conditions

The pediatric ophthalmologists at DMEI receive referrals from other practitioners in the state or region who can’t adequately treat rare pediatric eye conditions. Our doctors have more experience treating these conditions, which gives parents confidence that DMEI doctors can care for their child even if they suffer from a rare eye disease or disorder.

Integrated Access to Subspecialists

DMEI’s pediatric ophthalmologists are trained to handle almost all eye conditions that arise in children. However, there are times when certain cases require assistance from ophthalmologist specialists. In these situations, our pediatric ophthalmologists have direct access to some of the best ophthalmology specialists in the nation within DMEI for quick and easy consultation, referral, or collaboration in the following areas:

Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology

You should see a pediatric neuro-ophthalmologist if your child’s vision problems have an underlying neurological component. DMEI’s R. Michael Siatkowski, MD, is the only pediatric neuro-ophthalmologist in Oklahoma.

Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinical Trials

Our doctors are pursuing new treatments and cures for childhood eye diseases with the only active clinical trials in the state related to pediatric ophthalmology.

Ophthalmic Genetics Counseling

A genetics counselor comes to DMEI twice a month to help us diagnose genetic disorders in families. They also provide counseling on what gene therapies are available for the conditions that affect their family members.
