Special Interests

  • Investigating the efficacy of pharmaceutical drugs on the prevention of retinal degenerations.
  • Understanding the relative sensitivity of different rodent species and strains to acute and chronic light stress.
  • Application of non-invasive techniques (OCT, ERG, funduscopy, and Optometry) to measure retinal structure and function in rodent models of retinal degeneration.

Research Summary

Basic science research on animals is the first step before any pharmaceutical drugs can be used to treat human diseases. We used the light damage model of retinal degeneration to test the efficacy and toxicity of neuroprotective drugs in providing protection of retinal photoreceptor cells from cell death. Our studies also provide information on susceptibility to light in SD, SDCD, Wistar, and Long-Evans rats, which is necessary for drug studies on the prevention and protection of retinal degeneration.
