Education is a vital part of the Dean McGee Eye Institute(DMEI)/University of Oklahoma (OU) Department of Ophthalmology’s mission. This is demonstrated by DMEI/OU’s robust residency and fellowship programs that train the next generation of ophthalmologists as well as our medical student program and ophthalmic technician education initiatives.

Top-Rated Ophthalmology Residency Program

The most recent Ophthalmology Times survey of top residency programs ranked the DMEI/OU residency program among the top 12 programs in the nation, and No. 6 among programs associated with a public university. This is due to our faculty’s dedication to the academic mission, partnered with the abundance of surgical, clinical, and research opportunities available to our residents. Outstanding Ophthalmology Fellowship Programs

As a tertiary regional referral center, DMEI/OU handles a significant volume of wide-ranging eye conditions. This provides opportunities for fellows to receive hands-on experience in both common and rare cases within their chosen program. Fellowship programs available at DMEI/OU include:

Medical Student Education

As a department within the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, DMEI/OU provides multiple ophthalmology rotations for third- and fourth-year medical students. During these rotations, medical students gain the ophthalmic knowledge and skills that physicians should know. Medical students travel from all over the country to take advantage of the wonderful educational opportunities these rotations provide. Ophthalmic Technician Education

Education Awards

DMEI/OU wins a number of excellence in education awards on a yearly basis, with some dating back to the 1980s. Awards include those presented to residents by faculty or to faculty by residents.
