Dr. Khaimi was honored as “The Journal Record’s” 2017 Innovator of the Year on August 17. This award recognizes those individuals and organizations that exemplify the innovative spirit in our state. He is recognized for developing a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery called ab-interno canaloplasty. Known as ABiC, the procedure opens up the natural outflow channels of the eye to restore normal aqueous flow, without damaging tissue or leaving behind a stent or shunt. Khaimi performed the first ABiC in 2015 and has since treated several hundred patients using the procedure.
One of Dr. Khaimi’s significant accolades is the release of the book, “Essentials of Glaucoma Surgery”, which was published in June 2012 and has been widely distributed. Dr. Khaimi served as associate editor for the text and was also personally involved in the composition of multiple chapters. The book is the first of its kind for glaucoma surgery and provides a window into glaucoma surgical procedures with rapid insight and ready-to-reference information from more than 50 experienced surgeons in the profession. This resource uses a real-world approach to explain surgical glaucoma, allowing the information to be quickly digested and put to use by the reader. A section is included that offers perspectives from renowned experts on glaucoma surgery from where it began to where the future will go. With its real-world approach, user-friendly format, expert advice, and unique point of view, practicing ophthalmologists, residents, fellows, and medical students will benefit from this book.
Dr. Khaimi belongs to the Chandler Grant Society whose members are focused on preventing blindness from glaucoma through integration of research and clinical disciplines. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Khaimi is also a member of the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive surgery, Oklahoma Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. He also serves as a glaucoma panel member on the Practicing Ophthalmologist Curriculum Committee, American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Khaimi has served as a delegate to the Michigan Ophthalmological Society and as an American Glaucoma Society Representative for the Advocacy Ambassador Program at the AAO Mid-Year Forum in Washington, D.C. He is also the recipient of the American Glaucoma Society’s Mentoring for Advancement of Physician-Scientists (MAPS) Enabling Award Program. Dr. Khaimi’s effective interest in the development of glaucoma-related surgical innovations and his involvement in numerous clinical trials have allowed him to be active in publishing and presenting his work nationally. He is the primary investigator for the Primary Trabeculectomy vs. Tube study, RiGOR study, InnFocus study, and several pharmaceutical research studies. He has been co-investigator for the Trabeculectomy vs. Tube Study (TVT Study), Express mini shunt versus Trabeculectomy (XVT) study, the COMPASS study, and the Ologen versus Mitomycin C study. Dr. Khaimi has also coordinated and directed many city-wide glaucoma screenings. He has served as the glaucoma specialist alongside NewView Oklahoma for the annual Macular Degeneration/Low Vision/Glaucoma Seminar in Oklahoma City.
