First Year (PGY-2)

  • Dean McGee Eye Institute Resident Clinic – 10 weeks
  • Veteran’s Administration Medical Center – 20 weeks
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology / Children’s Hospital – 4 weeks
  • Oculoplastics - 4 weeks
  • Retina - 4 weeks
  • Cornea - 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Consults - 4 weeks
  • Elective - 2 weeks

Second Year ( PGY-3)

  • Veteran’s Administration Medical Center – 14 weeks
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology / Children’s Hospital – 8 weeks
  • Oculoplastics - 4 weeks
  • Retina - 4 weeks
  • Cornea - 4 weeks
  • Neuro-ophthalmology - 4 weeks
  • Glaucoma - 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Consults - 6 weeks
  • Elective - 2 weeks
  • Research - 2 weeks

Third Year (PGY-4)

  • Dean McGee Eye Institute Resident Clinic – 12-14 weeks
  • Veteran’s Administration Medical Center – 12-14 weeks
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology / Children's Hospital - 4 weeks
  • Oculoplastics - 4 weeks
  • Cornea - 4 weeks
  • Neuro-ophthalmolohy - 4 weeks
  • Glaucoma - 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Consults - 2 weeks
  • Elective - 2 weeks (This learning experience, which must be individually approved by the Program Director, could consist of an additional subspecialty or surgical rotation at DMEI, an extramural rotation to another institution, additional research time, or an international educational/service experience.)
  • Research - 2 weeks
  • China/Africa rotation - Residents have the opportunity to participate in the annual DMEI - Sichuan Province People's Hospital/West China University trip or the Swaziland, Africa Trip with expenses covered. These 2-week trips offer outstanding and unique educational experiences in systems-based practice, diagnosis and management of diseases not seen in the U.S., and international service, and provides tremendous opportunities for professional and personal cultural exchange. Call

PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents are on call approximately every 9th night and every 9th weekend. Weekends begin at 7:00 a.m. Saturday and end at 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

PGY-4 residents are on call as surgical backup from home for an average of 7-days every 4 weeks.

All call is taken from home but sleeping quarters are available at the Eye Institute if needed.
